ADDX RV Spring Startup Checklist: Get Ready for Camping Season
Spring is finally here, and for RV enthusiasts, that means it’s time to get your vehicle ready for another season of adventures! After a long winter break, preparing your RV for the open road requires careful attention to detail. From exterior checks to interior systems, this comprehensive checklist will guide you through all the essential tasks to ensure a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable RVing season.
Exterior Preparation
1. Protective Covers & Initial Inspection
Before you hit the road, make sure to remove all protective covers from your RV and any specialized equipment. If you had any duct tape or covers in place, use WD-40 or Goo Gone to remove any adhesive residue.
- Inspect the roof and exterior body for damage such as cracks, tears, or wear. Pay special attention to seals around doors, windows, and roof components.
- If you notice any stains on the interior ceiling, it could indicate leaks. Be sure to use proper sealants to repair any damage. Don’t forget to remove old sealant before reapplying fresh material.
- Check your awning for mildew, tears, or insect nests. Roll it out completely and clean with recommended awning cleaners. Ensure pull straps and mechanical components are in good condition, replacing any worn parts.

2. Tires & Mechanical Components
- Inspect tires for any visible damage. Check for adequate tread depth (replace if tread is 1/16 inch or less) and inspect for cracks or cuts in the sidewall.
- Inflate tires to the recommended pressure using an accurate air compressor.
- For towable RVs, check the hitch system for wear and tightness, repack wheel bearings with fresh grease, and tighten lug nuts according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- For motorhomes, don’t forget to service key engine components:
- Change engine oil and replace the filter.
- Replace spark plugs if needed.
- Service the fuel system (injection or carburetor).
- Replace air filters, top off brake fluid, power steering fluid, and change transmission fluid and filter.
- Flush and replace old coolant.
- Inspect all hoses and belts for wear and replace as necessary.
- Check fuel lines for leaks and replace the fuel filter.
3. Exterior Cleaning
- Wash the exterior of your RV with specialized RV cleaners to maintain the finish and prevent dirt buildup.
- Use wheel cleaners that provide UV protection to keep your wheels in top shape.
- Lubricate all moving parts like hinges, locks, and slide mechanisms to ensure smooth operation during the season.
Interior Preparation
1. Air Quality & Ventilation
- Open all windows and roof vents to air out the interior and let fresh air circulate.
- Check the operation of ventilation fans, and ensure they are working properly.
- Clean or replace air conditioner filters to keep the system running efficiently.
- Inspect your air conditioning system to ensure it’s in optimal working condition for the upcoming hot months.
2. Appliance Inspection
- Air Conditioner:
- Remove the protective cover from the AC unit and replace it if necessary.
- Take off the AC shroud to inspect the blower fan, motor, and cooling coils. Clean and vacuum the condenser coil, and ensure the cooling fins are free of debris.
- Clean the discharge air openings and ceiling grills to promote proper airflow.
- Furnace:
- Remove the furnace cover and inspect for lint accumulation or any signs of insect nests.
- Test thermostats to ensure they are working correctly.
- Check all LP connectors to make sure the furnace is safe to operate.
- Refrigerator:
- Open the exterior refrigerator vent and remove any debris, nesting material, or rodent bait.
- Clean the gas burner assembly for optimal performance.
- Follow the manufacturer’s startup procedure to ensure a smooth start for the season.
